Paraty’s most-loved beach, seafood bars with ocean views, riverfront walks and an 18th-century fortress all contribute to the appeal of this neighborhood.

Pontal sits opposite Paraty Historic Center enclosed entirely by rivers and the glistening turquoise waters of Carioca Bay. Visit Pontal’s beaches for tranquil sunbathing and energetic watersports. Hike to the grounds of an ancient hilltop fort and join boat tours to the glorious islands of Paraty Bay.

On sunny days locals and tourists alike make their way to Pontal Beach, which sits in the shadow of a forest-clad headland. Dive into the inviting water and spot fish swimming around your feet. Bring snorkeling equipment for up-close views of the marine life. When the tide is out there are excellent opportunities to beachcomb for shells.

Watersports are popular at Pontal and rentals are available along the beachfront. Enjoy the chance to try kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Relax at the collection of bars and restaurants, where you can sample shrimp dishes and churrasco (grilled meats). Sip on caipirinhas, coconut water and cold beers while watching pretty sunsets as soulful Brazilian music plays in the background.

A trail leads from the northern end of the Pontal Beach to the hilltop Defensor Perpetuo Fort Museum. Here, exhibits explain how this military fort served to protect Paraty from pirate raids. See cannons, tools used in the sugarcane industry and photos that show a slice of Brazil’s slave trade. The view from the fort reaches over a bay of pretty islands and a pathway winds downhill to the quiet Forte Beach.

Be sure to take a leisurely stroll along the Perequê-Áçu River waterfront. Spot the colonial landmarks of Paraty Historic Center such as the Church of Our Lady of the Remedies and Nossa Senhora das Dores Church. Boat tours depart from the riverfront and make stops for scuba-diving, snorkeling and sunbathing around Paraty Bay.

Pontal is only a 15-minute walk from Bandeira Square, in central Paraty. You’ll find a varied selection of guesthouses, hotels and hostels located in the neighborhood’s serene streets. Less than a mile to the north is Jabaquara Beach.
