Bohemian Trindade is a jewel in the crown of the coastal towns of Brazil’s breathtaking Costa Verde region. Positioned between emerald hills and gorgeous coves and wrapped in an easygoing vibe, this old fishing village is where visitors often come for a day and stay for a week. Spend your days in Trinidad lounging on golden sands, swimming in crystalline waters and riding rolling waves.
The sweeping bay of Praia de Fora (or Praia dos Ranchos) fronts the village center. Spend your time between the beach’s tempting turquoise waters and low-key bars. Leave your footprints in the sand while ambling along the shoreline and enjoying the postcard-like scenery. Campsites and posadas stand within a short stroll from the bay.
Surfers delight in the big breaks at Praia do Cepilho, reached by car or by climbing over boulders at the northern end of Praia de Fora. Surf equipment rentals are available at shops in the village. Hike down a forested trail for more superb surfing conditions at the secluded Praia Brava.
A small headland separates the southern side of the village with more idyllic beaches. Swim in the calm waters of Praia do Meio and then continue on foot to the almost deserted Praia do Cachadaço. Follow intrepid beachgoers over rocks and through a forest to Cachadaço Natural Pool. Another hike brings you to Pedra Cabeca do Indio rock and jaw-dropping coastal views.
Don’t miss the hike to Pedra que Engole rock, where you can use the force of a waterfall to slide through a rock tunnel. If you are still craving the beach then join a boat tour to isolated strands such as Praia da Galetinha, Praia da Ponta Negra and Praia do Sono. Return to the village and spend the evening listening to bossa nova and reggae at lively bars.
Trindade is 168 miles (270 kilometers) west of Rio de Janeiro. Buses travel regularly from Paraty to this pristine slice of coastal nirvana.
