The large island of Samos is one of the most appealing of Greece’s many isles. While it has some very well-known resorts, the vast majority of the island is as yet mostly undiscovered by foreign visitors. Explore an island steeped in history and dotted with impressive archaeological remains and perfect beaches lapped by transparent seas. Stay in the lively capital or in a tranquil resort.
Samos is part of the northeastern Aegean Islands. The sun dazzles in the sky for most of the year and the waters are as warm as a heated pool. Whether you are looking for a quiet hike through mountain forests or a totally relaxed beach escape, Samos is the place to find it. Try the local sweet wine and decadent food, no matter what kind of vacation you choose.
Head to the resorts of Kokkari, Pythagorio, Kampos and Votsalakia for well-equipped hotels, seafronts lined with restaurants and many choices of activities and watersports. The eastern beach resorts offer views of rolling hills, so nature is never far away.
Search for the island’s impressive archaeological sites. Start at the Samos Archaeological Museum in the capital city of Vathi and the Archaeological Museum Pythagorion in Pythagorio where you should also visit the Tunnel of Eupalinos. Considered one of the greatest achievements of the ancient world, the 3,400-foot (1,040-meter) tunnel, a water pipeline, burrows through a great mountain. Allow time to see the Temple of Hera too, located between the airport and the village of Ireon. The temple dates back to 8th century B.C. It was built to honor Zeus’s wife, Hera, and is far larger than the Parthenon.
Visit Samos in the warm months from spring through fall to appreciate its beaches. Lounge on pebble or sand beaches and swim in open seas or sheltered coves. While the entire island is scattered with fantastic beaches, some of the most famous are Tsamadou, Tsabou, Psili Ammos and Agios Konstantinos.
