Sapporo’s western ward, stretching from the city to Mount Teine, features gorgeous natural landscapes and a range of cultural attractions.

The peaceful, sprawling district of Nishi reflects the diverse charm of Sapporo, which balances urban excitement with natural beauty. Nishi is one of the city’s first regions to be settled and subsequently urbanized by the Japanese. Explore its unique history and relax in tranquil green spaces before heading toward the iconic Mount Teine.

Begin touring the eastern part of the ward, a mixed commercial and residential area near central Sapporo. Visit the popular community center Chieria, a combination of library, educational and recreational facilities and a café.

Continue to the much-loved Shiroi Koibito Park, a theme park operated by a local chocolate company. Enjoy the festive atmosphere and unique European-style architecture before viewing exhibits about chocolate and watching Hokkaido’s famous Shiroi Koibito cookies being produced inside the factory. Join a hands-on workshop to make your own Shiroi Koibito, delicate butter cookies with white chocolate sandwiched between wafers.

Nishi ward has numerous green spaces and tranquil places of worship. Stroll through Miyanooka Park, a lush city park carefully landscaped with walkways and lookout points. Visit the small, historical Hassamu Shrine or venture farther afield to the Nishino Shrine, which was made famous by a visit from Japanese music superstar Masaharu Fukuyama.

Make your way along the residential Nishino Green Road by foot or bike during cherry blossom season when the trees are covered in pink blooms or a few days later when the blossoms have created a pink carpet.

Head west of Nishi to visit Mount Teine, whose different zones were used for slalom, giant slalom, bobsled and luge venues.

Nishi is Sapporo’s western ward. Ride the subway for 15 minutes from Odori Station to Miyanosawa and explore the surrounding area by foot. Use taxis or cars for other sites and a ropeway to access the top of Mount Teine. Before you descend the mountain, appreciate the magnificent views over Sapporo and its surroundings.
