The River Elbe carves through the hilly terrain of Saxon Elbland, connecting the region’s cities and villages. This area contains traditional townships and the large city of Dresden, as well as vineyards throughout the undulating countryside. Stroll through the Elbe Valley to gaze up at the Erzgebirge and Lausitzer mountain ranges.

Explore the architecturally and culturally rich municipality of Dresden, which is the largest city in the region. Admire the Dresden Frauenkirche’s large dome and Baroque style. Relax in its New Market Square, around which stand more Baroque structures. Other highlights include Dresden Castle, Pillnitz Castle and the museum complex of Zwinger Palace.

Enjoy local treats, such as eierschecke and special cakes at Christmas time. Be sure to sample the region’s meat specialty, Dresden sauerbraten.

Bring the kids to the Platsch Water Park in Oschatz on Dresden’s northwestern outskirts. It contains spa baths, jet-stream canals and several pools for swimmers of all ages. Wander through the adjacent town of Riesa for its charming Trinitatis Church and the towering wooden sculpture Elbquelle.

Further northwest is the quaint town of Belgern, which has a 17th-century statue of the mythological medieval character Roland. Admire the red façade of the impressive Belgern Rathaus building beside the statue. Enjoy a picnic on a sunny day in the serene Roland Park.

Embark on the Elbe bicycle route, which follows the river’s meandering path through Saxony. Admire scenic views of undulating meadows. The valleys are dotted with vineyards that contrast with the mountains for which Saxony is famous. Try Saxon wine in one of the northernmost wine growing areas in Europe.
