Visit the West Central District to explore one of Taiwan’s oldest regions, adorned with temples, shrines and other historic buildings. Department stores and parks provide a modern side to this old-world zone. Enter the district through the 19th-century Duiyue Gate or 18th-century Great South Gate, part of Tainan’s original city ramparts.
Understand the area’s rich history by exploring its oldest attractions. Admire the imposing pediment and columns of the Old Tainan District Court, which dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. Visit the remarkable Grand Matsu Temple for its baroque décor. Other important spiritual hubs include the State Temple of the Martial God, the Kaiji Wu Temple and the Sanguan Temple.
The Temple of the Five Concubines stands in the middle of a leafy park. Learn about the five women buried here who are said to have taken their own lives to die with honor by their husband’s side. Head to the 17th-century Koxinga Temple to see its well and statues.
View the iconic Fort Provintia and relax in the scenic grounds of Tang Te-chang Memorial Park, which commemorates its namesake lawyer and mayoral candidate, who saved many lives.
Note that the sector was formed in 2004 with the unification of the former West District and the Central District. At the western end of the zone is the Anping District, known for its enchanting Anping Old Streets. Explore the Former Tait & Co Merchant House and Anping Tree House, a one-time warehouse that is now covered by the roots of an enormous banyan tree.
The West Central District stands between Taiwan’s western coast, the East District and the North District in the heart of Tainan. Drive north from Tainan Airport for 4 miles (6 kilometers) or travel here by bus from the Tainan Station in Tainan City Centre.
