Old church
Old church
A very unique place close to San Cristóbal de las Casas.
The reason to go is the church. The religion of the people of Chamula is a very special mix between Mayan religions and Christianity. When you enter the church you find yourself in another world. There are no benches, the floor is covered in pine needles and there are thousands of candles on the floor. Shamans murmur spells, there are chicken sacrifices and the whole atmosphere is a bit surreal.
(Btw photography is prohibited)
//
Made the trip to Chamula to visit an infamous temple (?)/ former church that is home to the indigenous people of the area. Their customs are familiar yet so original, it was an honour to be allowed inside their place of worship to observe.
\\
This was a very different experience which we’ll be explaining in detail on the blog. Just know it involves vast quantities of Coca-Cola , pine needles and some chickens.
//
No photography is allowed inside, which we respectfully adhered to. So my colourful play by play will have to suffice.
Yes, it's México.....but it's another world!
