An idyllic, misty view of Sandavágur! I was on my way to the otherworldly Trøllkonufingur! Trøllkonufingur was one of the best sights on Vágar Island and one of the highlights of my trip. But, I also enjoyed the walk to and from there! I hiked about 12 KM that entire day and it was well worth it.

Sandavágur has been voted the most well-kept village in the Faroes twice. And it's the most famous "city" in the country, and best voted traveling experience. Although, not an actual city at all - the population is only around 861! The name Sandavágur means sandy bay and refers to the sandy beach which used to be much larger than present. From one point in Sandavágur you can get a view of all the southern islands in the Faroes. And the red-roofed church seen in this photo is one of the best in the Faroe Islands! In fact, members of the Danish Royal Family were there 1 day after I was! I even saw their motorcade as they were continuing on their journey. A pretty cool experience, too ;).

I took this photo on August 25th.

Beautiful valley at Vágar Island! I was on my way to Trøllkonufingur and got great views on the way! I also have a photo of Trøllkonufingur on Trover :). This was a really memorable day. Well worth the 12 KMs I hiked that day!

Took this photo 2 weeks ago. One of the best sights on Vágar Island! Trøllkonufingur, which means the Troll woman’s finger, is a 313 m tall monolith on the south-east side of Sandavágur. Only 11 people are known to have reached the top.

Legend has it, that Trøllkonufingur is the finger of a witch that came to throw the Faroe Islands to Iceland. When she came to the sea south of Vágar, the sun came up and she was turned into stone and fell into the ocean.

She was so big that when she reached the bottom of the sea, the back of her head and her finger were above the surface. The back of her head is the island of Koltur, and the finger is Trøllkonufingur.

It is said that in 1844 a member of the Danish royal entourage climbed Trøllkonufingur. At the top he waved to Crown Prince Frederik, as he sailed past it. As climbing down, he realized that he had left one of his gloves at the top. He decided to climb up again to get it. Having just climbed it the first time he was tired and stumbled and fell into his death.
