Lighthouse Cottage--1.5 blocks from beach.

All surfaces are disinfected between guests.

Step back in time to an old-fashioned beach cottage. Lighthouse Cottage is in the shadow of the Tybee Island Lighthouse, which is just 1.5 blocks away. The beach also is just 1.5 blocks away. In the heart of the former Fort Screven, this 3-bedroom cottage was built in 1920 by the US Army to house non-commissioned officers. Just a block away is Battery Garland and the Fort Screven museum. This is the islands quiet, secluded north end preferred by celebrities.

The original clawfoot bathtub and the original enamel kitchen sink/cabinet have been restored. Most of the interior walls are original 5-inch wide tongue and groove planks laid horizontally. These were discovered and restored when 1/4-inch paneling was removed. The master bedroom has a queen bed and an en suite bath with double shower. No shower curtain or door needed. Also in the master bedroom, an alcove containing a trundle bed (2 twins). The two other bedrooms both have queen beds.

Tybee Island's North Beach: Great dolphin viewing --- virtually guaranteed on the north end of the island. Dolphin boat tours are always available, but sitting on the north beach is just as effective. We once watched a band of dolphins frolicking with a delighted kayaker. Tybee's beaches are equipped with porch swings that seem to be about 100 yards apart. From the north beach swings you can watch the sun set over Savannah and the mouth of the Savannah river --- incredible sunsets. Savannah, being 15 miles away, is too far away to actually see but you can see the fireworks on July 4th and New Year's Eve. Shrimp boats with their nets spread like wings are always in view.

The 2 Lighthouses: Two lighthouses less than 3 miles apart but so radically different in character. As you approach Tybee Island, you see the impressive Tybee Lighthouse in the distance. Tall, dark, and handsome with a white cumberbund. He was honored a few years ago when he got his own US postage stamp ( In lighthouse circles that is akin to an Oscar). But then as you cross the Lazaretto bridge onto Tybee Island, you look down to the left and blink. Is that a lighthouse in the water? Indeed it is. That's plucky little Cockspur Lighthouse. Weathered, plain white masonry. Not flashy at all, except ... At every high tide Cockspur stands in the ocean well off-shore. Only at low tide does the stony spur appear that supports the little lighthouse. A firm foundation after all.

Lost in the 40's/50's: So far the quaint shopping district near Tybee's pier has pretty much escaped the wrecking ball. As for shopping, no Sak's here. We're talking beach shopping: T-shirts, souvenirs, Sno-Cones, umbrella drinks, seafood. But remember, for culture and serious shopping, there is colorful, historic Savannah, just 20 minutes away. A Cute Comfortable Cozy Cottage

We found the perfect last minute place for our family of 5 & two friends. After visiting Historic Downtown Savannah it was lovely to getaway from the hustle & bustle of downtown & drive to Tybee Island’s Lighthouse Cottage. It was comfortable & clean. Had everything we needed in the kitchen for our Grilled dinner in their cozy back patio. We ended our trip with a absolutely memorable visit to the Tybee Island Lighthouse a 3 minute walk from the Cottage.

Cute cottage!

We loved the property. Nice fenced in backyard for the pups. The hosts thought of every amenity so we basically brought in food and essentials. Great part of the island to take the dogs for a walk. We even had a neighborhood rooster who announced the start of each day. We will definitely stay there again.

This place is perfect. The location is great. Such a unique neighborhood. Very close to the lighthouse and the beach. Cute park not far for dog walks. The house is also fully stocked. Even the towels and sheets are nice! I always bring my own and didn't use them. Absolutely loved our stay! Thanks for sharing your home and can't wait to come back.

Girls trip

Although Hurricane Idalia changed most of our plans, it was still a nice trip. Ted was very responsive to the couple of concerns we had which was appreciated. It would have been nice to have a doormat on the interior of the house especially with all the rain. The only concern my group had was that the floors could have used a better cleaning as our socks were quite dirty from walking on them. Overall, it was a nice time.

clean but could use some improvements.

The living room and kitchen furniture is very uncomfortable. A table with chairs with backs would be nice and the living room needs a comfortable couch and loveseat or chairs. The pictures make the house appear larger and more inviting than it is. Also there is a leak in the ceiling over the microwave. We used the recycling basket to catch the water. All this being said, we had a wonderful time. Very close to the beach and the beds were comfortable.

Disappointed. Next time we’ll read more carefully.

The description read “Lighthouse Cottage: modernized but the memories are preserved.” Modernization can mean a lot of things. There are showers and flush toilets, after all. It continues with, “Step back in time to an old-fashioned beach cottage where the screen door slams.” except there is no screen door to the patio. It goes on to read, “The original clawfoot bathtub and the original enamel kitchen sink/cabinet have been newly restored.” I guess restored means they have new fixtures. No argument with the last comment on the cottage. “Most of the interior walls are 5-inch wide tongue and groove planks laid horizontally. These were discovered and restored when 1/4-inch paneling was removed.” The photos of the cottage were obviously taken some time ago. The patio looks inviting, but the canopy and furniture are weathered, soiled and crusty. A January 2020 reviewer noted that the living room furniture is limited and uncomfortable and the master bathroom shower is lovely to look at but SLICK and the floor stays wet. We agree. There should be a floor mat and a safety rail. To top it off the cool lights in the kitchen area had a note attached stating that they were not working because of a “short”. Also, there were no window blinds in one bedroom. Not good if you are trying to sleep in. We learned a valuable lesson about choosing a rental with VRBO. When the majority of the description features the surrounding amenities and says very little about the property, beware. For the price we didn’t expect the Taj Mahal, but we expected better than this.
