Best known for its picturesque castle, this medieval town is full of cobbled streets lined with charming cafés, patisseries and restaurants.

Vianden is a lovely historic town, overlooked by a castle set on a wooded hillside. Come to see the castle and linger a while longer, enjoying a meal along the river bank and exploring other pleasant attractions.

No trip to this town would be complete without a visit to Vianden Castle. Embark on a challenging hike to the hilltop fortress or take an enjoyable scenic cable car ride. The castle was originally built between the 11th and 14th centuries. It served as the residence of the powerful Counts of Vianden for hundreds of years. The restored fortress is now home to an intriguing museum, which displays armor and excavated artifacts and features a number of rooms decorated in period furnishings.

Wander through Vianden’s quaint old town, where most of the shops are clustered along the steep Grand Rue. Find remnants of the medieval walls and investigate the attractive 13th-century cloister that was once part of the town’s monastery. Stop for a meal at one of the terrace restaurants overlooking the river or find a spot on a bench to sit and admire the view.

Walk across the bridge to visit Maison de Victor Hugo, a museum set in the former home of the famous French writer. En route to the museum, look for a bust of Hugo sculpted by Rodin. Inside the museum, you’ll find manuscripts, furniture and sketches belonging to Hugo, who lived here for three months. Note the excellent views of the castle visible from the windows.

Peruse the displays in theMusée Veiner, which is set in two historic Vianden homes. See 19th-century clothes, dolls, photographs and furniture in one home and an interesting little bakery museum in the other. Pick up an English pamphlet from the ticket desk, as the exhibits are labeled in German.

Vianden is located 21 miles (34 kilometers) northeast of Luxembourg City. The two cities are connected by regular train and bus services.
