Race down the slopes of the various ski resorts in winter and swim in one of the lakes in summer in this tranquil and scenic terrain.

One of Scandinavia’s preeminent ski resorts, Åre is a winter wonderland filled with ski lifts and snowy slopes. In summer, its white coat gives way to green parks, meadows and woodland areas. Explore the quaint town center for a range of historic attractions overlooking Åresjön Lake.

Prime among the resort’s rustic highlights is the 12th-century Åre Old Church, with its impressive Romanesque design and spectacular woodland backdrop. Attend one of the services that regularly happen in this active place of worship. On a sunny summer day, bring supplies for a picnic on Åre Beach, whose pier extends over the lake’s water.

Sit on a bench in the central square and explore some of the shops and restaurants branching off from it. If you’re feeling adventurous, join fun activities with Camp Åre, which organizes ziplining, snowmobiling and water sports on the lake.

Ride the Kabinbanan chair lift up to the ski area and appreciate the stunning views of the surrounding lake and mountains as you rise. Use the Åre Ski Resort’s many lifts and 57 miles (91 kilometers) of slopes of varying difficulty.

Let kids participate in the activities and beginner slopes of the Åre Bjornen Children’s Ski Area. Introduce them to Valle the Snowman and have fun in the music studio and workshop near Valles Torg square. Ski season runs from mid November until early May.

In summer, stay at a lodging near impressive Helgesjön Lake, a little to the southeast. Bring your kids swimming and admire the snow-capped mountains forming a scenic background.

The resort lies in the Åre Valley in Jämtland County, toward the northwestern area of Sweden. Drive or take a train west from Östersund to get here in a little more than 1 hour. You can arrive from several European destinations by airplane to Åre Östersund Airport.

With its children’s area and myriad activities, Åre is a ski resort with appeal for the entire family.
