With atmospheric traditional towns and heritage sites, soaring skyscrapers and glitzy malls, this Gulf island nation is a vacationer’s delight.

Bahrain is steeped in history and features some of the most fascinating ancient sites in the world, yet it also offers visitors a touch of glamor with its high-rise hotels, mega-malls and fine-dining restaurants. Despite being a small island nation, Bahrain is packed with exciting things to do. For an away-from-it-all break, head to the outlying islands that serve as tropical oases.

Visit the modern capital of Manama, known for its fantastic restaurants and art galleries. Wander around the Bahrain National Museum, the country's most popular attraction. Exhibits here chronicle Bahrain’s history. Marvel at the architecture of the Bahrain National Theatre, the third-largest opera house in the Arab world.

Pick up a bargain in Manama Souq, where clothing, nuts, spices and shisha pipes are all for sale. Take a tour around the Al Fateh Mosque, the largest mosque in the country.

A 20-minute drive west will take you to Bahrain Fort, a stunning 16th-century hilltop fort overlooking the northern coast. Get a photograph in front of the Tree of Life, an ancient mesquite tree whose survival in the barren desert has led to locals claiming it is the last trace of the Garden of Eden.

Just 20 minutes’ drive southwest of Manama discover the ancient Burial Mounds of A’ali, a vast collection of burial tombs that forms one of the largest prehistoric cemeteries in the world.

Take a boat out to the Hawar Islands and watch for dolphins and flamingos. For something more exhilarating, drive a racing car around the track at the Bahrain International Circuit, one of the world’s best motorsport facilities.

Fly into Bahrain International Airport. Take taxis for shorter journeys or book a tour guide to help you explore more remote attractions and islands. Visit during the latter half of the year in fall and winter for the most temperate weather and blue skies. Bahrain is often considered to be one of the most progressive and relaxed of the Arab nations, allowing the entire family to fully enjoy a vacation here.

Explore a centuries-old fort one day and take the children to a lively water park the next. In Bahrain, the choice is up to you.
