Tree-lined streets and river views provide the perfect setting for top-end restaurants and trendy theaters in this much-loved Brisbane neighborhood.

New Farm is a picturesque suburb nestled in a bend of the Brisbane River. Spend a day or book accommodations in this area to enjoy the great food, exclusive fashion and tranquil green spaces.

Catch a fun show at the Brisbane Powerhouse, a multi-arts venue where you’re just as likely to see a cutting-edge drama as a stand-up comedy routine. Enjoy refreshments at the bar and check out the cool architectural twists that make this re-purposed power station so interesting.

Pack a picnic and head to New Farm Park to pass a glorious few hours watching the sun glinting off the yachts on the river. The 15 hectares (2.4 acres) of green space here provides a wonderful setting to walk, jog or relax. Stock up on tasty supplies at the weekend farmers market or spread out your rug for an evening at the moonlight cinema. If you’re here in the period from late October to the end of November, you’ll be greeted by the sight of purple blooms carpeting the sidewalks as the stately jacaranda trees drop their flowers.

Enjoy a fine-dining experience at one of the many excellent restaurants that line James Street or nibble on tapas served at some of the cool bars. Follow up with a comfortable seat at one of the local art-house cinemas, where you can see interesting movies from all over the world.

The New Farm Bowls Club offers a more casual outing. Here you can enjoy a relaxed game of barefoot bowls on the green then gather around the bar to meet the locals. There’s no need to wear white, just bring a smile!

The best way to soak up the atmosphere of this area is to take a stroll through the pleasant leafy streets. Go to Merthyr Village for groceries, fashion and gifts or follow the Homewares Trail to pick up interior design items. After all that walking, you’ll want to stop at one of the cafés on Brunswick Street or Merthyr Street.

The lovely inner-city suburb of New Farm is a blend of bustling cultural hub and easy-going village community.
