Tanjung Aru has plenty to keep you busy, but don't restrict yourself to just the one place. Organize a set of wheels and head off to discover what else awaits in the wider area. Here are a few places to choose from:

• You'll discover Crocker Range National Park and lots more interesting sights in Keningau. From Tanjung Aru, it's approximately 45 miles away.
• Next stop? Consider Kota Belud, which is around 40 miles away. Mt Kinabalu is one local hot spot you won't want to miss.
• Make tracks to Gunung Mulu National Park for a day out in nature. Pack a picnic to enjoy or just recharge your batteries in the fresh air. From Tanjung Aru, it's 160 miles away.

If you don't have a driver's license issued in Malaysia, then you might need to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your home country to be allowed to rent a car. It's also important to note that if you do need an IDP, it won't be valid on its own.
