Eastern Market

Live like a local by shopping where thousands of others do in the heart of a prestigious neighborhood. Tour the area’s long list of things to do.

Within a few blocks of the Capitol, Washington’s Eastern Market has an impressive selection of vendors selling delicious fresh produce, meats and seafood. You can also just browse and experience the activity and enjoy some of the local fare at the market’s eating establishments. Allow enough time to visit stalls carrying artisanal foods, flowers, pastries, art pieces and handicrafts, all protected from the weather.

The market earned its historic landmark status by being a part of Washington’s early cityscape since 1873. Adolf Cluss designed this building as well as another Washington landmark, the aesthetic Smithsonian Arts and Industries Building located on the National Mall. The market’s popularity necessitated extensions to the original building being added over time.

Look around the market to understand how the venue was and still is used as a town square. It’s perhaps not surprising that this spot has been regarded unofficially as the town center.

Tragedy struck in the spring of 2007 when fire severely damaged the market. Appreciate the resolve among public officials and citizens to quickly rebuild the structure. This not only provided enrichment for residents and visitors, but also restored the livelihood of many who had come to depend on the market.

For a time the market had to operate outdoors. Soon after, the East Hall was built to provide a temporary location for vendors and customers until the rebuilt market was re-opened in 2009. Visit on a weekend to experience the flea market and outdoor vendors, but arrive early if you intend to have brunch, as there can be a long line to get inside.

Find Eastern Market east of the National Mall, not far from the U.S. Capitol. It’s open from early morning to evening but closed Mondays. Metered street parking is available. Alternatively, take the Metro to the Eastern Market station.
