Dating to 1870, this was the prisons hospital. Here’s a bit more history: In the late 1840’s France had a problem with overpopulation in its prisons and made the decision to transport some of the prison population to the Iles du Salat (Salvation Islands). This particular set of islands is about 6 miles off of the coast of French Guiana and made up of Ile Royale, Ile Saint-Joseph and Ile du Diable. The French also installed prisons on the mainland of French Guiana as well as other islands located north of here. The prison was run on the Salvation Islands from 1852 until 1946. A law was passed by the French Government in 1853 that required convicts to stay in French Guiana following their release for a time equal to their sentence ... or, for sentences exceeding eight years, for the remainder of their life’s! So, incarceration here really was a life sentence with no ability to return to mainland France! Interestingly, the islands are still part of France and the EU as is mainland French Guiana.

Nice hotel with good service. The only problem is the restaurant the food is very limited and On Saturday there was only pizza and salads and they told me after I order.
