Wander through native scrubland, learn about plant species, have a barbecue or find a spot on the grass to enjoy the view of the Perth skyline.

Kings Park occupies a 1,000-acre (400-hectare) space right next to Perth’s central business district. It’s home to the stunning State Botanical Gardens, huge trees, large tracts of native scrubland, attractions for kids, cafés, a gift shop, barbecue areas and the State War Memorial.Start with visiting the 44.5-acre (12-hectare) State Botanic Gardens to gaze at wildflowers from Western Australia and beyond. Check out the odd shape of the big, 750-year-old boab tree. Enjoy spectacular views of the city and Swan River from the hill with the Wishing Well, or climb the 101 steps of the DNA Tower to reach the highest point in the park. The 50-foot (15-meter) high tower, in the shape of a double-helix molecule, represents the development of life. There’s plenty of space for kids to run and play and there are many barbecue areas around. Check out Synergy Parkland playground with life-sized statues of now-extinct Australian megafauna or visit the Lotterywest Family Area, specifically designed for children under the age of six. Kids will discover the insect world at the Saw Avenue picnic area and can clamber over rocks in the bushland of Naturescape.Visit the State War Memorial to see the eternal flame and monument to those killed in Australia’s military conflicts. Take the Fraser Avenue Ceremonial Walk to admire the landscaped gardens and commemorative plaques.Stroll along the Federation Walkway among towering eucalyptus trees or enjoy the longer Bushland Nature Trail that goes through almost untouched native forest. Another great track is the Boodja Gnarning Walk. Dedicated to the Nyoongar Aboriginal tribe, this walk’s name translates to “living off the land” and the signs explain the practical and spiritual significance of the landscape. Stop by the park administration building or check the website for maps and information about dozens of other walks. You’ll find cafés, restaurants and other shops throughout the park.Kings Park and Botanic Garden is about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) from central Perth. The public park is open 24 hours, though some facilities close at nightfall.
