Watch concerts and sporting events, tour an ancient monastery and hurtle down roller coasters at an island destination in the capital of Andalusia.

With a theme park, 15th-century monastery, botanical gardens and concert venues, La Cartuja makes for a fascinating place to visit. Head across the Guadalquivir River to this small island packed with attractions.

The island takes its name from Santa Maria de Las Cuevas, the 15th-century Carthusian monastery where explorer Christopher Columbus stayed while planning his second voyage. Today, it's the home of the Andalusian Centre of Contemporary Arts. While here explore the chapels and cloisters to admire the baroque architecture, Doric arches and ornate sculptures. Stroll through gardens to see the ombu tree. According to legend, it was planted by Fernando Columbus, the son of the man who discovered the Americas for Spain.

Next to the monastery is the Jardin Americano, a botanical garden. Amble along shaded paths and riverside walkways among tropical and sub-tropical plants.

La Cartuja experienced a complete makeover for the Expo 92 which celebrated the 500th anniversary of Columbus' first voyage. It was a chance for the city to show off its achievements and involved the construction of massive pavilions. While many of the Expo 92 buildings were demolished after the visitors departed, some remain. The Pavilion of Navigation is one example it houses an interactive museum dedicated to oceanic exploration.

One of the legacies of Expo 92 is Isla Magica, an amusement park built on the former grounds of the international event. Ride on roller coasters, cool off amid the waterfalls, pools and slides of the waterpark and explore themed areas set in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Watch soccer matches and concerts at the Olympic Stadium, a 60,000-seat arena that is one of the largest in Spain. See what's playing at the Rocio Jurado Auditorium, which has hosted some of the biggest names of Spain's contemporary music scene, including Pablo Alboran and Malu.

La Cartuja Island is less than 5 minutes from the city center and is not technically an island because it's not surrounded by water. To get to it walk, drive or travel by bus across the Barqueta Bridge.
