Follow the Elbe River upstream from Dresden to find this idyllic riverside hamlet, considered the birthplace of European porcelain.

With its Gothic castle perched high above the river, the Meissen historic town is one of the most picturesque in Saxony. Meissen is located just 16 miles (25 kilometers) from Dresden but it feels like you could be in a fairy tale. Famous for Meissen porcelain, the town continues to produce ceramics and attracts collectors and the curious from around the world. Visit the castle where the first example was made or take a tour of a porcelain factory to understand the process behind its construction.

Meissen is located with the Elbe Valley and is in the heart of Europe’s northernmost winemaking region. Spend a day visiting local wineries or sit back in one of the town’s many bars to sample the local produce. An annual wine festival is a great chance to experience the town’s festive sprit while trying a range of varieties from the valley. Despite being Germany’s smallest wine region the Elbe Valley has a lot to offer.

Visit the town’s Gothic castle and cathedral to learn about the town’s history. Today the castle is a dedicated museum and will transport you back to the time of German kings and queens. Visit the cathedral to see the final resting place of members of the House of Wettin.

The town bursts in to life for its annual pottery market and Christmas market. Experience the traditions of northern Germany as you sip on mulled wine and sample local produce. The pottery market is a great opportunity to pick up souvenirs and gifts.

Hotels can be found scattered throughout the historic old town where you’ll find yourself surrounded by Renaissance architecture, cozy restaurants and quaint cobbled streets. Arrive in Meissen by car or train from Dresden in just over half an hour. Once in Meissen you’ll love exploring the town by foot. Taxis are available to reach local wineries.
