The Treasure Coast comprises a stretch of exquisite coastline on Florida’s Atlantic Coast that has a fascinating colonial history. Its name is a reference to the Spanish Treasure Fleet that was lost at sea in a hurricane in the early 1700s. Visit the Treasure Coast to spend time traveling up and down this picturesque strip, while learning about the rich history along the way.
The largest city in the region is Port St. Lucie, which overlooks the Indian River Lagoon. Rent a boat to take out on the water and sunbathe on the sandy beaches. On a pleasant day, study the floral displays of the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens and visit the Oxbow Eco-Center to learn about the local wildlife.
Head north to admire the historic buildings of Spanish colonial design in Fort Pierce, the oldest incorporated city in St. Lucie County. Its highlights include the Old Fort Pierce City Hall and Heathcote Botanical Gardens.
Reach the northern end of the Treasure Coast for Vero Beach, whose McLarty Treasure Museum covers the region’s history and explains the meaning behind its name. Go paddle boarding and kayaking with the Paddles By The Sea operator and browse the stores of the Indian River Mall.
Outside the cities, the area has a great deal of stunning natural terrain. Bring your family for a picnic on the sands of Avalon State Park or go fishing in nearby Fort Pierce Inlet State Park. Other rural gems include Savannas Preserve State Park and Jonathan Dickinson State Park.
The region covers a large portion of the Atlantic Coast in the southeastern part of Florida. It is a little north of the Gold Coast and Miami, running from Palm Beach County toward the Space Coast. Fly to Orlando Melbourne International Airport or Palm Beach International Airport and enjoy a pretty drive along the coast.
