Cabin in woods. It has all the basics and is great value for a family or group of friends looking to explore the area.

Like staying at Grandma’s
We love staying at the Garst House whenever we’re in town to visit family. We love the interesting history of the place, and all the old furnishing. Everything is old, and yet, spotlessly clean. It’s like staying at Grandma’s house.
This is a unique property. The house is beautiful, but it was a little difficult to tell what exactly we were getting from the listing. We wound up with a room with an en-suite bathroom, which I would definitely recommend, otherwise you may be sharing a bathroom with complete strangers. We stayed here as part of RAGBRAI, so it was completely full and folks were definitely having to share a bathroom and coordinate showers. Not a huge deal, but we were happy to have our room with the bathroom. All in all, a good stay
We stayed in the Garst House in the ground floor room with private bath. Being mid-week we had the whole house to ourselves. The house itself is amazing with its history and furnishings. There were a few minor maintenance issues but nothing we couldn't handle.
The listing could use more details about the various rooms. The shared restroom on the ground floor has no tub or shower (glad we got the suite). The second floor rooms have a full shared bath and the suite with private bath is much larger than the one downstairs.
There are multiple options in addition to the Garst house, make sure you know which location you need to go to.

We loved it and would have given it a 5 except that our room was cold.

My husband was working in Iowa and this was the only location listed on Expedia...the posting wasn't clear. It stated he would have the entire apartment to himself, but when he got there, it was a very old farm house with several rooms that shared space. The bathroom downstairs was not working. He didn't end up staying because he didn't feel safe...it was dark, old and creepy.

Probably won’t do that again.
It appeared the place was not cleaned before we arrived. Bedsheets and towels were dirty, broken glass on the floor in two very different places of the house, 1 of the three queen-sized beds we couldn’t even use due to the frame being cracked and not being stable. Maintenance came out the next morning and said they couldn’t fix it so we had people sleeping on the couch and floor because the bed wasn’t usable, oven was filthy.
The property is beautiful but all of the big divots in the ground rolled many ankles of several family members while we were out front playing yard games.
All in all, we were there to spend time together as a larger family and we were able to successfully do that. We enjoyed our time.

Peaceful scenic getaway
We stayed in the quaint Hollyhock cottage at the home farm for three COVID-safe nights, while work was done at our home. Fishing was walking accessible just down the hill. It was serene and peaceful. The accommodations were comfortable.
