East Side Kid friendly Vacations

We booked the Sonesta because the other hotel we were staying at didn’t have availability for the last night we were in town. The best part of our stay was the size of the room. It was large with a separate bedroom and kitchenette. The bathroom was unbelievably tiny though. Also there were no extra pillows or blankets which you would expect from a higher end hotel. The dormen and porters were very helpful and friendly. There were two ladies at the front desk that were pleasant. Other than that the others could use a refresher course in customer service. I’m used to having a front desk attendant explain some of the amenities of the hotel or at least say “enjoy your stay” or “thank you for staying with us”. That didn’t happen. Maybe I’m being unfair by comparing them to the other hotel down the street but I probably wouldn’t stay there again.

We felt very welcomed when we checked into 48LEX — the staff member who assisted us was exceptionally pleasant. The hotel’s location is excellent, with easy access to the subway and plenty of nearby food options. We also enjoyed the restaurant attached to the hotel; the breakfast was excellent with a wide variety of choices. Our room was pleasantly spacious for New York, but unfortunately the air conditioning did not work well. We were told it operates on an environmental sensor that requires movement, which meant the room became too warm at night and made it difficult to sleep, despite the comfortable, firm bed. Additionally, one of the elevators was out of service for the entire weekend, leaving only one operational, which caused delays.

I love the convenience, size of the rooms and breakfast at the Kitano. The staff are also incredibly helpful. On two different stays, we asked to move rooms, once for a faulty AC, in whitch they upgraded us to a mini suite. And once when the bed was uncomfortable. Not all rooms are the same. Some are larger but haven’t been renovated and need new mattresses. But others are wonderfully elegant in that Japanese understated way and extremely comfortable. My only wish is that the restaurant and the rooftop were open on Mondays and the rooftop served lunch.
