View an exceptional array of American art at this highly respected museum, an important part of local and national art scenes for over 50 years.

Discover the nation’s rich cultural heritage at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. This fascinating gallery displays a wide collection of American art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Spend a few hours here getting acquainted with the country’s lively cultural history. Leave time to explore some of the other museums and galleries in this very artistic area, the Fort Worth Cultural District.

The museum dates back to 1961 and was designed by famous architect Philip Johnson. It is named after Amon G. Carter Sr., who originally funded the museum as a home for his own works by Charles M. Russell and Frederic Remington, as well as to display American art more broadly. Visit today and you will see how the museum’s collection and reputation have grown over the years.

Within the permanent collection, look for paintings and sculptures by some of the biggest names in American art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Alongside the works by Russell and Remington, look for pieces by Georgia O’Keeffe, Thomas Eakins, Frederic Church, John Singer Sargent and many others.

Marvel at the enormous collection of prints by American photographers, which is one of the finest collections of its kind anywhere in the country.

Check what is on before you visit, as the temporary exhibits rotate regularly. Interesting talks, workshops, tours and other events are also often held here, so it is worth seeing if any coincide with your time in Fort Worth.

Spend some time at other cultural attractions nearby, such as the renowned Kimbell Art Museum and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. The area also has many museums that are not focused on art, such as the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, which pays tribute to inspirational women of the American West.

Find the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in the heart of the Fort Worth Cultural District. Note that it is closed on Mondays and has extended hours on Thursdays. Admission is free.
