Enjoy the city views while following this raised round walkway that stands above the meeting point of two canals.

The Circular Pedestrian Bridge (Ponte Pedonal Circular) is a modern landmark surrounded by a colorful architectural landscape. This undulating structure presents a pedestrian link between the wharfs of two canals located at the edge of central Aveiro. Unveiled in 2006, the bridge honors the city’s fishers and fishing industry. Stroll around the Circular Pedestrian Bridge and take photographs of brightly painted waterside buildings.

Stand at the water’s edge and study the wave-like design of the cable-stayed bridge. It has a diameter of 85 feet (26 meters) and a 6.5-feet (2-meter) wide wooden footpath. Three sets of steps and ramps provide pedestrian, stroller and wheelchair access from the Botirões Canal and Sao Roque Canal.

Walk around the bridge and then position yourself on its southern side for uninterrupted views along the Botirões Canal. Admire the pastel-hued and tiled facades of the cafés and private residences set on the canal’s wharfs. The eastern side affords views along Sao Roque Canal to the curving Carcavelos Bridge. Arrive in the evening to watch the sunset and then wait for the bridge to become illuminated by floodlights.

An alternative way to see the bridge is by taking a guided canal tour on a moliceiro boat. Similar to a Venetian gondola, the moliceiro is a slim boat designed to move effortlessly around the city’s waterways. The boats were historically used to collect and transport molico (seaweed). Join a cruise at Jardin do Rosso park and relax as you travel along calm waters, beneath bridges and past elegant art nouveau landmarks.

Find the bridge in the main tourist zone of Aveiro. Aveiro train station sits about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) to the east. Free parking is available on the northern banks of Sao Roque Canal.

The Circular Pedestrian Bridge is one of several interesting places to visit in central Aveiro. Other attractions include Aveiro City Museum, where you can peruse displays of ancient artifacts and fine art, and Mercado do Peixe market, a great place to watch fish auctions and sample seafood.
