Dombås is a tiny village in Dovre that makes a great base for exploring some of Norway’s most impressive scenery. Stay here to be close to landscapes ideal for hiking, skiing, and taking part in a wide range of other sports and outdoor activities. Arrive or depart in style by riding the famous Rauma Railway.
Despite its small size, Dombås appeals to many visitors because it is so well-connected by public transportation and also sits right on the edge of the wonderful Dovrefjell–Sunndalsfjella National Park. Since 2002, the park has protected a vast and beautiful alpine habitat. Visit the park to spot everything from wolverines to caribou to golden eagles. Marvel at the size of the powerful musk oxen which roam the space. The musk ox is often considered to be one of the symbols of the Dovre region.
Plan a hike up Snøhetta if you are feeling ambitious. This splendid mountain is located inside the national park.
As well as the wintersports and hiking opportunities found around Dombås itself and in the national park, you will find different sports offered in some of the neighboring towns. Drive southeast for just over 90 minutes to reach Sjoa, famed for its whitewater rafting, or head north to Oppdal where you will find a wintersports resort with an excellent range of slopes.
One of the key reasons many people come to Dombås is to experience the incredible Rauma Railway. Climb aboard a train in Dombås and make the journey northwest to the port town of Åndalsnes. The trip will only take just over 90 minutes, but the route is famed for the wild and beautiful scenery and spectacular mountain vistas along the way.
Direct trains run from Oslo to Dombås, with the journey lasting around 4 hours. The journey by car takes a little bit longer, but you will be able to pull over whenever you want to appreciate the wonderful views.
