Devote at least a couple of days to visiting Etelainen District, also known as the Finnish capital's southern major district. Discover museums, art galleries, cathedrals and an island destination.

Head for Market Square. This vast plaza in central Helsinki is bordered by the South Harbor and overlooked by the 19th-century Presidential Palace. Browse the stalls of the market for food and souvenirs then relax with a coffee and pastry in one of the outdoor cafés.

From the square, you can see the golden domes of the nearby Uspenski Cathedral. Walk over to the Eastern Orthodox church and tour the interior for its paintings, chandeliers and statues.

Visit other beautiful churches in the district, including Helsinki Cathedral, a neoclassical structure dedicated to Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. Temppeliaukio Church is a copper-domed building also known as the Rock Church because it was quarried out of natural bedrock and rubble, which form its interior walls.

Enjoy a journey of discovery in the district's museums. Study the work of Finnish artists covering several eras at Ateneum Art Museum and browse new contemporary pieces at Kiasma. Learn about the history of Finnish design from the late 19th century to the present day at the Design Museum. At the National Museum of Finland, look at artifacts and exhibitions that cover the history of the country from prehistoric to contemporary times.

Travel approximately 3 miles (5 kilometers) west of the city center for Lauttasaari. This small island is predominately a residential area but also has beaches, forested areas and footpaths.

In the evening, take advantage of the Etelainen District's many entertainment options, including the Finnish National Opera and Ballet and the Finnish National Theatre. The Helsinki Music Center is a popular venue with several concert halls for classical, folk, rock and jazz performances.

With religious buildings, green spaces and cultural attractions, Etelainen District is a fascinating place to stay or visit.
