Follow in the footsteps of Winnie the Pooh on the extensive trails and delight at the little-changed state of this medieval landscape.

High Weald is made up of vast and scenic woodland and parkland in the suburbs of London. Rolling green hills and open meadows interspersed with quaint hilltop villages characterize the extensive landscape. On a visit to High Weald, get to know the English countryside by hiking between the hamlets of this gorgeous terrain.

At the eastern end of the grounds is Bewl Water, a large reservoir that is a picturesque spot for wedding ceremonies. Go camping and fishing around the lake and embark on walks through the surrounding forest. Rent a rowboat to take out on the water and in the summer let your kids clamber on the inflatable obstacles at the Bewl Water Aqua Park.

Stroll east to reach the edge of Bedgebury Forest, where you can go horseback riding or cycling. The Bedgebury National Pinetum has one of the most complete collections of conifers in the world, with 12,000 trees.

On the western side of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Beauty, lose yourself in the enchanting Ashdown Forest, where A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh stories were set.

Experienced hikers will enjoy the challenges of long-distance trails such as the Saxon Shore Way and Sussex Border Path. The High Weald Landscape Trail runs for 94 miles (151 kilometers) between Horsham and Rye. Pass wooded ravines, heath lands, hop gardens and rock formations as you hike.

Note that the area was featured in the 11th-century Domesday Book, back when it was even more densely packed with trees. Much of the terrain is unchanged from the Middle Ages. Admire the timber-framed buildings serving as pubs in the villages. Bring your kids to one of the area’s events, which include Christmas shows and woodland activities.

High Weald is a large area in the southern suburbs of London on the way to Brighton or Southampton. Travel here from the center of London by train south from Victoria Station to Horsham railway station. Explore the surroundings for the towns of Crawley, Horsham and Guildford.
