Delve into the heart of Argentina’s gaucho traditions and relax at Atlantic coast beaches in this region of low-lying, fertile grasslands.

The Pampas is a sprawling area of grassy plains where the nomadic farming lifestyle of Argentina’s gauchos (cowboys) is at its most prominent. The Pampas stretches westward from the base of the Andean Mountains to the Atlantic coast. Its fertile lands make it an ideal place for cattle rearing, from which much of Argentina’s world-renowned steak originates. Experience cattle and cowboy life at an estancia (working ranch), explore reserves teeming with wildlife and enjoy some of the nation’s favorite beach towns.

At the heart of the region is La Pampa Province, the bread basket of gaucho heritage. Find European influences in the orderly capital of Santa Rosa and visit laid-back villages such as lakeside Casa de Piedra and 25 de Mayo. Go bird watching, horseback riding, hiking and hunting when staying at estancias located a short drive from Santa Rosa. Finish your day with a wood-fired asado (barbecue) accompanied with succulent meats and fine wine.

Spot varied wildlife and admire barren landscapes at the province’s protected reserves. Lihue Calel National Park is great for camping and hiking and shelters fox, Patagonian hare and wild cat. Walk amid calden forests, see herds of red deer and visit the historic Estancia San Hubero in Pedro Luro Park.

Travel west to the Atlantic shores of Buenos Aires Province. Take your pick of the bohemian surf spots, large resort towns and sleepy villages that spring to life during the summer months. Among these are Pinamar, Cariló, Villa Gesell, Mar del Plata and Miramar. Sample superb cheese and cured meats in Tandil, cruise the waterways of Tigre and wander the pretty cobblestone streets of San Antonio de Areco.

The Pampas region runs north to the southern edge of both Córdoba Province and Santa Fé Province. Discover more hiking opportunities in the rolling Sierras de Córdoba mountain range.

Reach the Pampas by flying to Santa Rosa Airport from Buenos Aires or taking long-haul buses from major Argentine cities. Extend your vacation by venturing into the Cuyo - Wine Region to explore bodegas around Mendoza Province and partake in adventure pursuits amid striking Andean landscapes.
