Fukushima has plenty to keep you busy, but don't limit yourself to just one place. Arrange a set of wheels and take to the road to explore the wider area. Here are some great options we've come up with:

• You'll find Nagoya Castle and loads of other interesting sights in Nagoya. From Fukushima, it's about 85 miles away.
• Your next stop? Make it Okayama Prefecture, which is around 90 miles away. Okayama Castle is one local hot spot you shouldn't miss.
• Mount Asama is about 210 miles from Fukushima and is one of the region's most beautiful nature spots. Go for a wander around and enjoy the fresh air.

If you don't hold a driver's license issued in Japan, then you might need to apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your home country to be allowed to rent a car. It's also important to note that if you do need an IDP, it won't be valid on its own. You'll need to show your current license your passport and other forms of documentation as well. Lastly, make sure the credit card used to book the rental matches the name on your license and passport. Some other things to note to rent a car internationally are:

• Age restrictions: You need to be 25 or older in most countries to rent a car. If you're younger, it may still be possible to rent a car but you'll have to pay a Young Driver's Surcharge. Additional restrictions may also apply to the types of vehicles you can rent.
• Driving limitations: Make sure you read the fine print before you drive away. Typically, you can't cross country borders, drive on ferries or go off-roading with a rental car.
