When you've ticked off the fabulous places in San Francisco, there's more to discover in the surrounding area. Collect the keys to a rental car, stow your bags in the trunk and get out there. Here are some road trips we think you'll enjoy:

• Make tracks to Cuenca for a fun-filled sightseeing experience. Around 80 miles from San Francisco, it has loads of inspiring attractions, including New Cathedral of Cuenca.
• About 110 miles away, Ambato is also a hit with wanderers. Make sure you experience Mall of the Andes while you're in town. It's one of the reasons people love coming to this vibrant city.
• Spend time in nature and take in the serenity at El Panecillo. You'll find it about 170 miles from San Francisco.

If you don't hold a driver's license issued in Ecuador, then you might need to apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your place of residence to be able to rent a car. Also consider that if an IDP is required, it won't be valid on its own. You'll be asked to show your current driver's license your passport and other forms of identification as well. Lastly, make sure the credit card used to book the rental matches the name on your driver's license and passport. Some added requirements for international car rentals are:
