Decades after closing, this church in the heart of the city is no longer used for religious activities but remains an iconic institution welcoming you to Newcastle.

Towering over much of central Newcastle, All Saints Church is a glorious historical building to visit. It was constructed in the late 18th century to replace its medieval predecessor. Admire the blend of classical touches throughout the church and gaze up at the baroque tower that rises from its center.

Inspect the clock at the center of the upper section of the clock tower. Beneath it stands a row of columns supporting an imposing pediment. See the structure at night, when lights illuminate the majestic bell tower and its clock faces. From the other side of the River Tyne you’ll also find great photo opportunities of the spire rising from the city’s skyline.

Attend one of the occasional concerts and other events that take place in the church, which lost its congregation when it closed for repairs in the 1950s and never reopened. The building is also used as a center for urban studies. Chat with locals about the tales of legendary hauntings and murmurs of ghosts.

On certain Heritage Open Days, look around the interior of the church. Admire the large arched windows, as you stroll through the elliptical nave. Explore the chapel and vestry, noticing the various antiques, including the abandoned organ.

Consider the intriguing history of the church, whose current structure was completed in 1796 by architect David Stephenson. Its original incarnation was constructed in the 12th century and it is thought a Roman pantheon stood here before that. The site fell into disrepair in the late 1700s, before being demolished.

All Saints Church is just inland from the northern bank of the River Tyne, in central Newcastle. Travel by train to the Manors railway station and walk southwest for 5 minutes to get here. Other attractions in the area include the Black Gate, the Newcastle Castle and the Riverside Newcastle.
