Two expansive ski resorts in North Lake Tahoe have joined to provide some of the finest snow experiences on the whole continent, with an added dash of celebrity sparkle.

Head to Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows for a stellar ski experience ideal for snow lovers of all abilities. The resort’s highly coveted terrain and conditions attract Olympian Jonny Moseley, among other celebrity skiers year-round.

Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows have joined, providing a combined 6,000 acres (2,400 hectares) of terrain, California’s largest ski area with panoramic views of lovely blue Lake Tahoe, framed by snow-capped peaks.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows has 42 lifts, 270 runs and an aerial funitel, which takes you to the top of the highest peaks, offering access to experts who can tackle the resort’s KT-22 and Granite Chief chutes. If you’re an intermediate skier, enjoy the Shirley Lake, Pacific Crest Trail and Alpine bowl areas. Beginners can practice from the base to the mountaintop and attend ski school with skilled instructors. With an average snowfall of over 450 inches (11 meters), skiing and snowboarding continue into the sunny spring.

Smart skiers have been coming to these peaks for nearly 70 years, including for the 1960 Olympics held at Squaw Valley. Admire spectacular mountain terrain spread over six high summits. About 100 acres (40 hectares) of runs are available for night skiing under the stars. Find three training parks and a 22-foot (7-meter) super pipe to work on fancy snowboard tricks.

Rest and rejuvenate at The Village at Squaw Valley, located at the base of the mountain. Find over 60 restaurants and bars serving food from around the world, as well as galleries and boutiques for unique souvenirs and gifts. Attend the Blues, Jazz and Funk Fest and Bluesdays Tuesdays for music and relaxation.

Take the spectacular Aerial Tram and relax in the high-altitude hot tub at High Camp or ski through Sherwood’s glades to visit the Ice Bar at the back base of Alpine Meadows. In addition to snow sports, try disc golf and roller skating. In the summer, enjoy dazzling scenery on a hiking trip or a challenging mountain bike ride.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows provides diverse enjoyment for the whole family in winter and summer. Reach the mountains within a 1-hour drive from Reno or 3.5-hour trip from San Francisco. Starting in March 2016, Alaska Airlines will add a new daily non-stop service from Orange County’s John Wayne Airport to Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows via Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Jet Blue Airways offers the East Coast’s only daily non-stop service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows offers a free shuttle to travel between ski areas.

Squaw Valley's true value lies in the upper mountain. Yet, as we learned from the locals/regulars, SV suffers from high winds and other storm related impacts. Most of the days of our visit, the majority of the mountain was closed (no criticism of the ski patrol/resort, they were keeping the guests safe). It's just more susceptible to less-than-ideal weather in the area. We ended up over at Northstar, which is in a better position.
