Abando is a stylish district of shops, museums, galleries and parks covering much of Bilbao’s city center. This downtown area’s two neighborhoods of Abando and Indauchu (Indautxu) were the focus of Bilbao’s late 20th-century transition from an industrial hub to a city of culture. Visit Abando to go window-shopping along wide boulevards, relax in leafy, green spaces and discover the city's art scene.
One of the district’s favorite meeting places is Plaza de Federico Moyua, an elliptical square in the heart of the city with French- and English-style flowerbeds. Relax on a bench and take in views of the fountain and the mountains that provide Bilbao with its spectacular backdrop.
From here, walk a few minutes north toward the River Nervion for the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. The scaly-looking, titanium-clad building that resembles a spaceship is the city’s top tourist draw. View collections of contemporary and modern art then continue your cultural adventure at the nearby Bilbao Fine Arts Museum. It showcases ancient, modern and contemporary art from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Behind the museum is the lush and colorful Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park. Wander along tree-lined avenues, past fountains and a duck pond, in this large urban retreat. Visit the botanical garden and stop by works of art scattered throughout the park. Other highlights include sports facilities, a children’s play area and a traditional carousel.
Enjoy other green spaces in the district, including Albia Gardens, which used to be Abando's main square. It lies close to the start of Gran Via, Bilbao’s main shopping street. If you’re in the mood for shopping or just looking for some ideas, spend a couple of hours on the long avenue investigating the department stores, designer boutiques, jewelers and shops selling gourmet foods.
Get around the district on foot or by public transportation. If you’re traveling by rail from other parts of Spain, you may well arrive at Abando Railway Station. It is home to a huge stained-glass window depicting Basque life, making it a good introduction to the area.
