Reach the summit of a mountain, have a picnic and count soaring hawks at this pretty park, one of Maine’s five original state parks.

Enjoy a quick hike in pristine natural conditions while visiting Bradbury Mountain State Park, just outside Freeport. Spend the morning shopping at Freeport’s numerous outlets then head to the park for a fast summit trek or several hours of exploring along 21 miles (34 kilometers) of interconnected trails over 800 acres (320 hectares).

One of Maine’s five original state parks, Bradbury Mountain was acquired from the federal government in 1939. Prior to the arrival of the first Europeans here, the land was used by the Wabanakis as a camping stop on their way to the coast. In the 1880s, a local family raised grapes on the mountain. Near the park’s Northern Loop Trail, look for the cattle pound that early settlers built. Throughout the 1940s, the mountain offered downhill skiing with a rope tow.

Mountain biking is a favorite activity at Bradbury Mountain the park has been rated number one for off-road biking in Maine. Cycle on the park’s renowned and challenging trails. Note that these trails are also used by horseback riders in summer and snowmobilers in winter.

Warmer months bring campers, hikers and picnickers. In spring, bird lovers come to see the annual hawk migration. From mid-March to mid-May, the annual Hawk Watch provides important data regarding northbound raptor flight. Birdwatchers of all ages also arrive in April for the Feathers Over Freeport annual weekend event. Winter is just as busy at the park, with snowshoers, snowmobilers and cross-country skiers following the trails.

Learn about the park’s ecological, geological and cultural elements on one of Bradbury’s Natural Heritage Hikes. Look for this information on the Summit Trail, Northern Loop Trail, Bluff Trail and Ski Trail. Take Summit Trail as the quickest way to the top and its panoramic views.

Visit Bradbury State Park year round, from midmorning until sunset. The park is a short drive northwest of Freeport, halfway between Portland and the twin cities of Lewiston and Auburn. Pay the entrance fee to attending staff or at the self-service station. Facilities are closed in the off-season, but you may still gain access by parking outside the gate.
