Learn more about Caistor

Head to sights like Lincolnshire Wolds and Caistor Town Hall as you discover Caistor.

The church dates from the 11th century onwards and was rebuilt and restored in the 19th century. Certainly there was a church here in Saxon times and the lower part of the tower is probably Saxon, from around 1050. There is a west tower, nave with clerestory and north and south aisles, north porch, vestry and chancel. The tower is built in ironstone and dates from the mid-12th century. It is thought that the lower stage the tower could have been a Norman porch to the old church. The second stage is Early English and the top stage is Perpendicular. The tower has an embattled parapet with pinnacles and gargoyles. The tower arch has zigzag decoration. There are eight bells. The nave has four-bay arcades with octagonal piers and four clerestory windows either side. The chancel arch is from the 13th century. It is thought that the church may have been intended as being a cruciform shape with a crossing, or it may indeed have once been like this. The chancel was largely rebuilt in 1848 and restored in 1873. The reredos is from that date. There are several effigies of Knights set into arched tombs in the wall. There is a triple lancet east window, and stained glass from a variety of makers. The organ is by Cousans, and was installed in 1885. The rood beam is by Wilfrid Bond, erected in 1929.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Caistor?
For most visitors, the best area to stay in Caistor is within the town center itself, particularly around the Market Place.

This area is the heart of Caistor, offering convenience and access to local amenities. The Market Place serves as the central point, surrounded by historic buildings, local shops, and traditional pubs. It's a compact and walkable area, making it easy to explore on foot.

Couples often appreciate the town center for its relaxed atmosphere and easy access to local dining and pubs. You can enjoy strolls through the historic streets, visit the Caistor Arts and Heritage Centre, or simply unwind in a local establishment.

For those seeking a quiet retreat with a touch of local life, staying within the town center provides a pleasant experience.
When is the best time to go to Caistor?
The best time to go to Caistor is during the late spring and summer months, from May through September, when the weather is most favorable for exploring.

During these months, you'll find warmer temperatures and less rainfall, which is ideal for enjoying the Lincolnshire Wolds, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that surrounds Caistor. This period allows for comfortable walks and bike rides along the many public footpaths and trails.

Families will find the summer a great time to visit, as local attractions often have extended hours and special events. The longer daylight hours mean more time for outdoor activities, such as exploring the nearby market towns or visiting the coastal areas, which are a short drive away.

For couples looking for a relaxed getaway, late spring and early autumn offer a pleasant experience with fewer crowds.
