With more than 40 parks and open spaces, Chanhassen is rightly acclaimed for its abundant greenery and recreational areas. Explore this low-key and livable town, which combines city conveniences with a small-town feel and ample natural landscapes.
Once a sleepy farming settlement, Chanhassen began to expand in the late 1960s. The town’s name is derived from the Dakota Native American word meaning “maple sugar.” Visit today’s Chanhassen, which has been ranked among the top 10 best places to live by Money magazine and others.
Explore Downtown Chanhassen on foot. This part of town is where most of the city’s shops, restaurants and cafés are located. For evening entertainment, book tickets to a show at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, which feature musicals and cabaret performances. Dine while watching a show in one of the complex’s three theaters that range in size from the intimate 126-seat Playhouse Theatre to the 541-seat Main Dinner Theatre.
The real appeal of Chanhassen lies in its many recreational outdoor spaces. Choose between more than 40 parks and stroll along part of its 90-mile (145-kilometer) trail network. During summer months, sunbathe, swim and picnic at Lake Ann Park and Beach, Lake Minnewashta Regional Park and Lake Susan Beach.
Don’t miss the city’s star outdoor attraction: the 1,200-acre (485-hectare) Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Walk along paths leading past patches of woodlands, gardens planted with colorful flowers and grassy lawns. If you don’t feel like walking, ride the Trumpet Creeper Tram from May to mid-October.
Be sure to visit Paisley Park, the former private estate of world-famous performer Prince. Tour the complex and see objects and memorabilia associated with the late performer, including awards, artwork and clothing worn for concerts.
Chanhassen spreads across both CarverandHennepincounties. Drive southwest of Minneapolis for less than 30 minutes to reach here. Buses run between Chanhassen and Minneapolis. For the freedom to properly explore both Chanhassen and the surrounding area, consider renting a car.
