Definitely worth a trip to the Glen Alps Trailhead. Great hikes with amazing views!
We backpacked for 5 days in the Chugach Nat Forest. It was a great experience. I've hiked in Denali and Wrangell-St. Elias National Parks and the hiking here was as good and as scenic.
Beautiful, close
Great hikes! Use bug spray and be prepared for mosquitoes and flies. Flies don’t seem to bite but there are loads of them in July. We used Ben’s 100 and didn’t get a single bite.
Consider getting a bell for bears, when out hiking. Bears don't like to be startled, and the bell lets them know when someone is in the area, so they tend to stay away.
If you're pressed for time, do the Portage Glacier tour. I found it online when I searched for a day trip, and the one I found was run by Grayline Tours. Took a bus down to see the glacier, plus a stop at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation area to see more bears, moose, musk ox, etc.
