Collingwood is situated approximately 120 miles (193 kilometers) west of the national capital Wellington.
When it comes to getting the most out of your holidays, it's good to keep in mind that Collingwood is merely the tip of the iceberg; South Island is home to a treasure-trove of natural sights, cities and towns. If you're looking for other places to check out, you'll find Awaroa, 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the northwest, and Takaka Hill 25 miles (40 kilometers) to the northwest.
Organize some transportation and spend some time in Takaka, a regional center, located approximately 13 miles (21 kilometers) from Collingwood. The city has a range of visitor attractions, including Farewell Spit, Rawhiti Cave and Kahurangi National Park. If you have enough time, be sure to visit Te Waikoropupu Springs, Ngarua Caves and Harwoods Hole before heading back to Collingwood.
If the weather forecast makes you want to head indoors, take a trip to South Island's art galleries, history museums and craft workshops. South Island offers visitors some important cathedrals and other holy sites, great places to get a feel for the region's spiritual side.
Have a break from seeing the sights and cool off with a spot of sailing or wind surfing. If you like to feel the tickle of snowflakes upon your nose, South Island could be the ideal destination. The region is well-known for its skiing and snowboarding.
There is a saying: it's better to see something once than to hear about it a million times. With its breathtaking beauty Collingwood will not disappoint.
