The island population was never more than 150, yet it left behind a very rich written Irish legacy - the island boasted three writers Tomás Ó Criomhthain, Peig Sayers and Muiris Ó Súilleabháin whose books have been translated into several languages. There are now boat trips to the deserted island where the ruins of the village can still be see.
