About this property
Charming, Dog-Friendly Two-Story Cabin Lodge with Deck - Great for Families
Tucked into the pines of Fern Valley — the neighborhood locals affectionately call "the Rodeo Drive of Idyllwild" — Tahquitz Rock Lodge is a characterful, multi-level log cabin that feels like the mountains built it themselves. This is not a cookie-cutter mountain rental. It's a one-of-a-kind retreat with soul, history, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you forget your phone ever existed.
Walk the path through the towering pines and make your way up to the first floor, where the adventure begins. Inside, a dramatic spiral wooden staircase winds its way up to the heart of the home — a showstopper in its own right, and a conversation piece for every group that stays here. Please note: the staircase is charming but requires careful footing, especially for young children and pets, and the walk from parking to the front door means this home is best suited for guests who are comfortable on their feet. Upstairs, the main living area will stop you in your tracks. Soaring vaulted ceilings with exposed wooden beams, a magnificent stone fireplace flanked by built-in bookshelves packed with an extensive library, and a stunning wall of windows that frames the towering pines like a living portrait — so beautiful you'll find yourself just sitting and staring. Whether you're curled up on the couch with a book as the fire crackles, streaming your favorites on the smart TV, or simply sitting in the mountain silence, this room is pure magic.
Step through the door from the dining area and discover one of Tahquitz Rock Lodge's greatest treasures — a full wraparound deck that circles the entire second floor. Dine al fresco at the table for six, stretch out on the wooden sunbathing loungers, find your own quiet corner in one of the many two-person seating nooks, or simply breathe in the pine-scented air as the trees sway around you. And when night falls? This is a designated dark sky area — meaning once the lights go out at 9pm, the stars above Fern Valley are absolutely breathtaking. No light pollution, no distractions. Just you and the Milky Way.
The master suite upstairs features a sleigh bed and those same gorgeous windows looking out into the treetops, making waking up here feel like the best part of the day. Its private en suite bathroom is a retreat in itself — a gorgeous soaking tub, beautiful tile work, and a green vanity that feels both luxurious and perfectly mountain. Downstairs, two more bedrooms each with their own character await, including a second sleigh bed and a full bathroom. The first floor also has its own living area centered around a wood-burning stove — warm, tucked away, and perfect for families with little ones or anyone craving their own quiet corner within the cabin. A double futon here brings the total guest count to 8. The fully equipped kitchen has everything you need to cook a proper mountain meal — including a dishwasher and microwave — and when the weather calls for it, take it outside and fire up the gas grill on the wraparound deck. The dining area is ready for a feast either way. After dinner, dig into the game collection, pull a book from the shelves, or let the evening slow all the way down — the way mountain evenings should.
Tahquitz Rock Lodge sits in a true digital detox zone — cell service is limited up here, but free WiFi keeps you connected when you need it. Mostly though, the mountains will take care of the rest. Practical comforts are covered too — a washer and dryer on the first floor makes longer stays feel completely effortless.
Your furry family members are welcome too — up to two dogs are invited along for the adventure. Just a short drive away, the charming village of Idyllwild awaits — a one-of-a-kind mountain town with craft breweries, live music, wine bars, record shops, world-class hiking, and a thriving arts scene that surprises every first-time visitor. It's the kind of place people come for a weekend and start looking at real estate by Sunday.
Parking for 3–4 cars on site.
Good to Know: 3 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | Sleeps 8. Dogs welcome (2 max). The spiral staircase and walkway from parking require careful footing — please take your time navigating both. Cell service is limited — free WiFi available. Quiet hours are observed from 10pm–8am; a noise-awareness system is in place. Outdoor lights must be off by 9pm per dark sky area regulations. Riverside County prohibits blinking, flashing, or rotating outdoor lighting.

Relaxing weekend getaway.
This house was perfect for our family getaway. I loved the huge windows and wrap around deck that provided a great view of the outdoors. The spiral stairs were a little tricky for the dog, but he figured it out after the first day.
We had 3 adults and 2 dogs. This property was perfect. Our favorite feature was the wrap around deck and giant windows. It’s just a few minutes from town and very quiet and relaxing.
Overall, it's a sweet spot, pretty view from the wrap around porch. The bed upstairs was not very comfortable and having an open bathroom in that bedroom doesn't provide a lot of privacy, depending on who you're traveling with. It's hard to imagine more than four people staying in the space at once. Could use a more thorough cleaning but was a nice spot.
Good place for family. We were sad to be notified AFTER we booked that the main park to hike with kids was going to be closed during our stay; we felt that info should have been included in the property details for that timeframe. Otherwise property was pretty much as described.
The cabin is a dream and has a good, cozy feel. Everything worked. The cabin was very clean, the layout is great, plenty of space. The zero plastic amenities was nice touch. We enjoyed the view to the mountain tops, trees surrounding the cabin, the deck with teak furniture, the quiet location, walking distance to trails, simply everything was so wonderful.

Cabin with potential but some key misses
While the cabin has a lot of good things going for it - good mountain and forest views, big windows, wrap-around deck, it has a few comfort, repair and appearance issues that impact the overall stay experience.
This was an absolutely lovely stay. The house was clean, cozy, and beautifully decorated. The only caveat is there is a narrow spiral staircase to access the second floor where the kitchen and living room are. If there are people in your party that have difficulty accessing stairs, it might be a little difficult. This won’t be an issue for the majority of people. We loved our stay here and can’t wait to return!
Property was just as described. Within walking distance of several hiking trails. Very clean. Beautiful view from the spacious balcony. Minor issues were that a lot of the windows either don’t open or were very difficult to open/close and the spiral staircase was the only way to get to the main living space or outdoor balcony making it impossible for our dog to be on the same level as us. Overall, it was a great house that was very peaceful and relaxing

Beautiful, but… not family friendly!
It’s a great place to stay with a group of people or younger family members. Beautiful views, great location. Little kids or older family members, not friendly. The stairs to the house are steep and slick. After those stairs you have a narrow, very vertical stair case to the the kitchen. Great property otherwise. Owner left a wonderful binder with seriously great information/instructions, we used it several times.
This property is legit. If you wanting to be off the grid and enjoy hiking trails this is your want to go stay. Our family had a blast during our stay. It’s so close to the trail and nature and away from the city. On a positive note, I highly recommend this property if you really want to get away from your busy life and just chill…The big windows, grills provided, big fridge with ice maker, Spiral staircase, close to Humberpark trailhead, easy to find address, info binder, the big book shelves, WiFi and the Around the house patio are great big plus!!!! Some minor issues material condition wise and some amenities like: missing turning handles for the blinds on the master bedroom, loose step in the middle of the spiral steps, loose bed frame on the master bedroom makes constant noise with slightest move so annoying, trash can inside the house has no lid, no exhaust fan when cooking making the whole place smells, no TV in any of the bedroom, not comfortable with the bath tub shower only in the master bedroom specially with disabilities, no rice cooker, and some of the mini lights along the steps outside are out.

Great spring break with teens
I took 4 teens and our older dog to stay here for two nights. The cabin was easy to find and lovely. The rooms and bathrooms were nice as was the kitchen. I LOVED the wrap around porch! We were able to play games and have a fire in the cozy living room. It was a perfect escape.
I saw in other reviews that dogs struggled with the stairs, but we did not have that issue. I also saw on other reviews that the front stairs are difficult for some to navigate and I don’t think there’s a photo that really shows the walk from the car to the front door. I will say we were surprised at the steps as the cabin sits high above the road, but we didn’t find them to be an issue to climb. The views from the cabin, deck, fireplace, and grill outside were all very appreciated. Overall this was a great place for our group and we would definitely recommend it!

Incredible Cabin!
We loved our stay here, the house itself is amazing with the huge windows! The kitchen is great, it has everything you would need, even a blender, mixer, and a griddle. Plenty of board games and books for the evenings. Full size washer/dryer for longer stays. It’s really so comfy. The wrap around patio was such a plus, we stayed in summer so you can move to the shady side at any given time, there’s furniture all the way around. No AC, but it’s cool enough even on summer nights to open the windows and get a good airflow through the house. We did have an incident with our dog hurting her leg on the spiral stair case right when we got there, she almost fell through the railing, the stairs are fairly steep and the railings have a 12” gap, luckily my 7 year old was coming up and caught her back half before she fell from up there. She was limping for a couple days but was better after some rest. So be careful with your pets if you bring them. All in all though this place is amazing!

NOT a Dog Friendly Cabin
The cabin is in a great location with a nice deck to enjoy the view of the beautiful trees. Unfortunately, this is NOT a dog friendly cabin. The 1st floor consist of two bedrooms and a bathroom. A SPIRAL staircase is the ONLY access to the 2nd floor where the kitchen, family room, deck, and master bedroom is located. I saw the picture of the spiral stair but I wrongly assumed a second traditional stair case existed off the deck that surrounds the entire cabin. My wife and I, in our 70’s, could not get our 10 year old lab up the spiral stairs until the next day when our son arrived. Also, upon our arrive, there was dog feces that had been stepped on the outdoor stairs leading to the front door. More dog feces

Cozy and Cute, but Several Issues…
Overall: Cute small cabin near Humber Park.
Pros: Old cabin charm…
Cons: Unresponsive host. No instructions on checking in or out. Issues getting keys from lock box, as no directions on how lock boxes work. Given no cell service and no response from host as to my message, I had to drive back into town to get cell service to be able to watch a video to figure out how to get the keys out.
At departure, no instructions on what to do with soiled linens, dishes, trash etc., so we just did the best we could.
While this bills itself as dog friendly, our dog couldn’t navigate the very small circular stairway with log steps, but that might not be a problem for others.
Dishwasher is broken. Fireplace is not for guest use. Couches are very worn.
There were ants in the kitchen.
Cabin is absolutely wonderful, clean well furnished beautiful kitchen, beautiful views many stairs, but we were able to navigate them. Just everything about the cabin is perfect.
