Rose gardens and chalets of this sprawling village at the foot of the regal Hohe Salve provide great moments and memories.

Find the village of Itter on a plateau, overlooking the gorgeous Inn Valley. It features stunning close-up views of Wilder Kaiser and the Kitzbühel Alps. Its nickname, the “rose village,” stems from the many lush gardens blooming here in the summer between wide-roofed chalets.

Itter is quite secluded from the busier hubs of SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser Brixental and features activities beyond skiing or snowboarding. The runs you can reach from here are perfect for beginners and young skiers on vacation. Go on a peaceful guided snowshoe tour to explore the beautiful countryside or try some of the tobogganing runs.

As a base for a Tirolean summer vacation, Itter shines. Follow excellent hiking trails and climb up the Kraftalm for a panoramic view of the pastures and peaks of the Hohe Salve. On the peak, at an elevation of 4,450 feet (1,360 meters), you’ll find a traditional hut. The Gasthof Kraftalm will serve you a mountain breakfast complete with fresh trout from the nearby pond.

Also on Kraftalm is the Kapelle Kraftalm, a tiny, charming chapel with a thatched-roof tower. In the quaint streets of the village, visit Itter’s rococo parish church of St. Josef, which has ornate altar paintings and dates back to the 18th century.

High up on a mysterious rocky platform is Itter Castle, looking like a fairytale palace. This compact castle provides an intriguing backdrop for the little village. The Germans used the castle as a “VIP” prison for prized French prisoners during World War II. These prisoners, alongside newly arrived Americans, successfully defended the castle against attacking SS units during the “Battle for Castle Itter.” Gaze upon its lovely grounds from afar the castle is not open to the public.

For an affordable place to lodge in Itter’s fresh mountain air, rent a campsite on the opposite side of the hill from the castle at the popular Terrassencamping Schloßberg Itter. Enjoy the on-site restaurant and sauna.
