The many panoramic views contribute to making L’Anse-Saint-Jean one of the prettiest villages in Québec. Views of the Saguenay River winding between high shores is a spectacular scene, as is the Saint-Jean River, which flows through the village. Drive or cycle its roads to discover what the community and the region have to offer.
One favorite attraction is a well-maintained covered bridge crossing the river. Pont du Faubourg, Faubourg Bridge, is one of a limited number of such bridges in North America. Its history earned it a place on the Canadian one-thousand-dollar bill. As you walk or drive through the narrow bridge, view the walls covered by paintings from regional artists.
You can get a majestic view of the bridge and the Saguenay Fjord as a backdrop from $1000 Bill Vantage Point. The bridge is also a way to reach Matapédia Lake Seigneury Regional Park with its excellent selection of hiking and biking trails. Walk through the village of L’Anse-Saint-Jean, which dates to 1838, to view period homes and buildings.
Look for the little statues of Achille throughout the village indicating there's something to see or do at that spot. Indulge in a selfie photo with this bearded fellow in red pants and hat. The village is located by Parc National du Fjord-du-Saguenay, which stays open year-round so you can experience its endless beauty. The Fjord Museum to the west in La Baie showcases Saguenay fjords, its people and wildlife.
Even closer in the opposite direction from the museum is Petit-Saguenay River. Visit the wharf for a view of the fjord, especially magical at sunset, and watch for whales and seals.
The sheer beauty of the region is difficult to leave, so plan to stay a while, selecting from a wide choice of accommodations.
