Where to stay

in Legacy Trail

Cycle, walk or run the entire length or part of this popular trail. Exit onto junctions to experience a number of environments.

There’s an option to go between Sarasota and Venice in Florida: the Legacy Trail. Using a rail bed of a former train line, the flat paved surface is suitable for all ages to experience all or part of the trail. Park your vehicle at a number of spots along its 12.5-mile (20-kilometer) length.

You’ll find the trail is well marked with information and direction signs. If you start at the southern end in Venice you’ll see the historic train depot with its small museum near the downtown area. Use the bike repair station to make sure your two-wheeler is in top shape before continuing. Look for these repair stations along the way as well.

A number of trailhead deviations are on the path, which take you to areas to see animal habitats, residential areas, parks and the Intracoastal Waterway. The largest park is scenic Oscar Scherer State Park with its own network of trails and access to the Intracoastal Waterway. Stay overnight at the campsite for a fee.

Watch the trail’s scenery change from woodlands to open spaces and residential areas. At the end of the trail is Culverhouse Nature Park trailhead with its community garden and picnic areas. Most of the seven trailheads are equipped with restroom facilities and some have water fountains.

Notice in a few spots the original railroad track has been kept alongside the trail and over bridges. The route itself has an interesting history as trains were used to move the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus from Sarasota to its winter home in Venice.

The trail opened in 2008 with plans to extend it. Rent a bike at several businesses near parking lots. If you prefer to be chauffeured, book a free surrey ride from the Laurel Park trailhead.

Legacy Trail is open year round from early morning to sunset and dogs on leash are permitted. Admission and parking is free although the state park has a fee.
