The Campground and the hotel are the only two places you can legally watch the sunrise come up over Monument Valley. The valley road is closed to non-residents during the night. If you go to campground it is first come first serve, starting at noon. I would recommend going early and grabbing one of the prime spots. You will have an amazing view from your tent of the mittens coming up. This spot along the road is named John Ford Point, after the director who used it as a location for numerous Western films. Visitors can pay a few dollars to a local horse owner who is stationed in the parking lot to recreate the famous image of a horse rider perched on the edge of the plateau.
