Ride a boat on a Hades-like underground river meandering through the subterranean chambers of a cathedral of limestone stalactites and stalagmites.

The Punkva Caves consists of an underground labyrinth of paths, canals and holes packed with stalagmites, stalactites and a range of otherworldly formations. It features an extraordinary underground river that is like something out of the Greek Underworld. Join a guided tour through the various hollows of this subterranean world to understand its history and geology as well as the place of these caves in Czech culture.

Pass through the large cave with your docent and take photos of the pointed formations that hang and rise from the surfaces. These natural limestone exhibits are illuminated by bright light, reflecting on the surface of the underground river. Note that the site is part of the Moravian Karst, which has more than 1,000 gorges and caves.

Find your way to the Macocha Abyss, where you’ll finally see a piece of sky far above you. This remarkable landmark is a sinkhole surrounded by legend and history. Learn from the guide how this site, which is the largest hole of its kind in Central Europe, was explored in 1723 by a monk named Lazar Schopper. Outside the cave, admire the sinkhole from the lower and upper observation decks, getting to the upper area via a connecting cable car.

Toward the end of the guided tour, hop on the boat along the underground river for an exceptional experience. Call or email in advance to purchase tickets and ensure you get a place on the tour. Wear appropriate footwear for the slippery steps and bring a jacket for the cool environment.

The Punkva Caves lie in the northern region of Brno, in the southeastern part of the Czech Republic. From the heart of Brno, drive north for 20 miles (30 kilometers) to get here in less than 1 hour. Leave your car in the caves’ parking lot and ride the short tram to the entrance. While you’re in the area, make sure to see surrounding sights such as the Western Town Boskovice and the rest of the Moravian Karst.
