With an observation deck and a beekeeping museum, this is an idyllic and serene spot in which to stay while visiting the caves of the Moravian Karst.

Vavřinec is a small town often used as a base to explore the otherworldly Punkva Caves and the rest of the Moravian Karst, a limestone topography dotted with sinkholes, waterfalls and underground rivers. Descend into the caves for an underworld packed with pointed stalagmites and stalactites.

Chat with the guide on the tour of the Punkva Caves about the 18th-century monk who is thought to have been first to discover this underground labyrinth. Climb aboard the boat and make your way down the subterranean river. The impressive rock formations within the cave are illuminated by bright lights in this underground museum.

Visit the Sloupsko-šošůvské jeskyně, a cave system a little nearer the center of the town. It has two levels, with abysses, passages and domes that create an eerie and intriguing atmosphere. The carcasses of multiple animals, including hyenas, lions and bears, have been found down in these caves. Check the schedule for occasional chamber music concerts that make use of the excellent acoustics.

Reach the Kůlna Cave, which has been a part of the tour here since 1997. A skull of a male Neanderthal dating back 120,000 years was excavated from this spot. Back above ground, inspect the displays in the Museum of Beekeeping in the Moravian Karst and climb to the top of the spiraling staircase of the Podvrší Lookout Tower for excellent views of the surrounding towns and forest.

Find the town in the heart of the South Moravian region, in the southeastern part of the Czech Republic. Drive north from the core of Brno for 20 miles (32 kilometers) to get here in less than one hour. Consider visiting or staying in the nearby town of Blansko and continue northwest for the nature reserve of Žďárské vrchy.

Vavřinec is the perfect lodging area to see the Punkva Caves and the many natural highlights in the Moravian Karst.

"The hotel is overall good but the pictures online look much better than the real facilities. "The room interior is quite new and the location is in the old city, close to the attractions, shops and restaurants. The down side is that it is directly about an active bar. They actually put ear plugs in the room for guest use. The what seems like a window in the photos is a second locked door, ..."
