Innovative green parks complement the large college campuses and poignant monuments of this bohemian haven in the western part of Seoul.

Universities and modern governmental buildings characterize the large district of Mapo, which contains 24 dongs or neighborhoods. The colleges create a youthful ambiance, with countless cafés and bars lining the streets. Get a sense of the alternative and bohemian side of Korean culture in this artistic student hub.

Make your way around the Seoul Campus of Hongik University, which has its own visitor information center providing maps and guidebooks for the area. Join a campus tour of Sogang University and admire its modern architecture. Chat with some of the local and international students for a glimpse into the culture.

Visit the War and Women's Human Rights Museum to learn about the struggle of the so-called Comfort Women of Korea who were abused by the Japanese Army in World War II. Another poignant site is the Jeoldusan Martyrs Shrine, which is dedicated to those who lost their lives during the Byeongin Persecutions in the 19th century.

On dry and pleasant days, take advantage of Mapo’s range of leafy areas. See how Nanji Hangang Park converted a former garbage landfill into a set of wetlands and a marina. Haneul Park is part of the World Cup Park that was constructed for the soccer tournament. Wander over its tall silver grass in October to forget you’re in the middle of a city. Watch FC Seoul play soccer in the Seoul World Cup Stadium, whose architecture resembles a traditional Korean kite.

Mapo is a little west of the city center of Seoul, on the northern bank of the Han River. Arrive at Gimpo International Airport and travel by bus east for about half an hour to get here. Explore the city for nearby zones such as the Yongsan District, the Dongjak District and the Jongno District.
