Experience the Siege of Alkmaar, see the finery of the rich living in the Dutch Golden Age and discover the fascinating culture and history of the town.

The Stedelijk Museum is a perfect introduction to Alkmaar’s culture and history. Learn about Alkmaar’s golden age in the exhibit of artworks from the 16th and 17th centuries. Find many recognizable landmarks in the paintings, including the Waag, the weigh house in Alkmaar’s central square.

Descend to the basement to see an interactive exhibit on the Siege of Alkmaar in the 16th century. The siege occurred during the 80-year War with the Spanish. Alkmaar won because of their use of boiling oil. Watch a multimedia reconstruction of the siege and see the skeletons of 16th-century siege fighters dug up by archaeologists.

The museum’s art collection ranges from religious paintings predating the Protestant Revolution and works by Golden Age painters, to the darker expressionist paintings of the Bergen movement of the early 20th century. Study the Golden Age display, which also shows off other luxury artisan products that would have been found in the houses of the rich, such as silverware, glass and china.

For kids, the toy theater on the first floor of the museum is a must spot to visit. See historic toys, games and antique dolls from around the region. Enjoy the short film featuring the toys from this exhibit. The museum also has temporary exhibitions highlighting particular moments in the history of the area.

Have lunch or a coffee at the Stedelijk Museum’s Cultuurcafé. Alkmaar is known for its delicious Dutch cheeses. Enjoy a taste of the region’s best cheeses and other produce, have a classy high tea or relax with a locally brewed beer. Museum entry is moderately priced or is free with a Museum Card. You can also arrange to take a group tour of museum highlights in English for an additional cost. The museum is open during business hours on Tuesdays through Sundays.
