I have traveled to more than 60 countries across five continents and stayed in accommodations ranging from luxury hotels to extremely basic properties without running water or reliable electricity. The fourth-floor rooms in the Rio’s Masquerade Tower were worse. Between my friends’ room, the room I was initially assigned, and the room I was moved to, I personally entered three different rooms on that floor. The condition was consistently appalling. The carpets were visibly dirty, wallpaper was peeling, curtains barely functioned, some curtain rods were hanging precariously from the walls in spots. The elevator bank had little working light, leaving the area in near-total darkness. The second room I was given had no functioning AC. However, the most disturbing issue was finding both live and dead cockroaches in my toilet, despite the lid having been closed. I can only assume they entered through the plumbing. While obviously being extremely unpleasant, it also raised serious concerns for me about the sanitation and maintenance of the property. Had this not been our final night before an early flight, on Labor Day weekend when last-minute hotel rates were extremely high, I would have left immediately. We had spent the previous nights at other hotels, making the contrast even more striking. Based on the conditions I personally observed, I did not feel that this was a clean or safe place to stay. I would not recommend staying here under any circumstances.

Unless you want to spend a lot of money to stay in one of the higher class rooms, I would not recommend staying here. Our room was a lot smaller than it looked online, as was the pool, the shower was leaking the entire time, and the staff customer service was very poor. Anytime we asked the staff a question they acted like we were the most annoying/ inconvenient part of their day. And these were simple questions like how much something was when there wasn’t a price tag on it. There was a refrigerator that worked in our room, but you better hope you don’t need to warm anything up because there is not microwave and you have to pay $35 to rent one. This is a bit ridiculous when you can literally buy a microwave for only $50 at Walmart. All in all, our experience at the hotel was not the best and was overpriced for the quality of our room.

I felt like the walk from the front entrance was quite the distance and you could only catch ride shares from the front entrance. Discovered this the hard way. This particular room had to be close to the pool and club area as you could hear the music late at night.
