Until recently placed in the tanager family, it and other members of its genus are now classified as belonging to the cardinal family. Scarlet Tanagers breed in deciduous and mixed deciduous-evergreen forests in eastern North America. They are somewhat sensitive to habitat fragmentation, so look for them in large, undisturbed tracts of forest. During migration, they move through a broader variety of forest and shrubby habitats, as well as backyards. I found this one at Rock Den Park in Lawrence, MA, during last spring. Despite of the striking plumage they’re not easy to spot because they like to spend most of the time up in the big trees.
